Understanding how range hood ventilation works helps you get clean air over a Monogram cooktop and diagnose weak performance. A hood captures the smoke, steam, grease, and odors that cooking produces, using a blower to pull that air up through filters and then either exhaust it outside or clean and return it.

How range hood ventilation works

When you run the hood, the blower creates suction that draws cooking air up through metal baffle or mesh filters, which trap grease. From there, a ducted hood pushes the air through ductwork to an exterior wall or roof cap, removing it from the home entirely. A recirculating hood instead passes the air through a charcoal filter to absorb odors and returns it to the kitchen – useful where outside ducting is not possible.

Ducted vs recirculating

  • Ducted – exhausts air outside; the most effective at removing heat, moisture, and odor.
  • Recirculating – filters and returns air; easier to install but less effective, and needs charcoal filter changes.

What this means for performance

A ducted hood depends on a clear, short duct run and an open exterior damper. A recirculating hood depends on a fresh charcoal filter. In both cases the grease filters must be clean for air to move. Knowing which type you have tells you where to look when suction drops. The blower’s airflow rating sets the ceiling on how much it can move.

Keep it working

  1. Degrease the metal filters regularly.
  2. Replace recirculating charcoal filters on schedule.
  3. Keep ducted runs clear and the exterior damper free to open.

If extraction is weak, our weak suction guide walks through the causes, and the maintenance guide keeps airflow strong.

If the hood underperforms

A failing blower or controls, despite clean filters and clear ducting, is a technician repair. Our range hood repair service can diagnose it – book a visit. Ducted and recirculating options by model are on the manufacturer’s site, monogram.com.

The Path Air Takes Through a Range Hood

Understanding how range hood ventilation works comes down to following the air: where it enters, what cleans it, what moves it, and where it ends up. A Monogram ZV hood captures the hot, greasy, humid air rising off the cooktop and either sends it outside or cleans and returns it, and which of those it does defines the entire system.

Every range hood shares the same front end. Rising cooking vapour is drawn up into the hood and through grease filters, baffle or mesh, that strip out airborne grease so it does not coat the blower or the duct. Behind the filters, a blower (a motor-driven fan rated in CFM, cubic feet per minute) provides the suction that pulls the air through. CFM is the measure of how much air the hood can move; a higher-CFM blower clears a busy cooktop faster.

From there the two configurations diverge:

  • Ducted (vented outside), the blower pushes the captured air through ductwork to a roof or wall cap fitted with a damper. The damper opens under airflow and closes when the hood is off, keeping weather and pests out. This setup removes heat, grease, and moisture from the home entirely.
  • Recirculating, where outside ducting is impossible, the air instead passes through a charcoal filter that absorbs odours, then returns to the room. It removes smell and some grease but not heat or humidity, and the charcoal filter must be replaced periodically as it saturates.

The practical consequence is that a ducted hood is the more effective at clearing heat and steam, while a recirculating hood trades some of that performance for installation flexibility. Knowing how range hood ventilation works in your own kitchen, which type you have, where the air goes, and what filter it relies on, tells you exactly what to clean and what to expect from the hood.
